How to hire an illustrator

Stock images and stick figures can take you so far - but you've reached a point where you need bespoke artwork! Luckily, illustrators are a lovely bunch. And, it's pretty fun to research and hire one.

Step 1: Determine your style

Do you want your illustrations to be hand-drawn, colourful, detailed, vectors, black and white? Before you start your search, figure out the style that best matches your brand and project.

Step 2: Make a shortlist

Time for the fun bit! Browse Instagram, Pinterest, Google, illustration agencies, LinkedIn. Take note of illustrators that you like. You can search locally or globally; most illustrators will happily work internationally, over Zoom and email.

Step 3: Pick your favourites

Check out your shortlist in more detail, to see if their style matches what you're looking for. If it does - gather a few references from their website or social media, so they know exactly what you're after.

Step 4: Slide into their emails

Reach out to your favourite illustrator by email. Introduce yourself, explain your project and ask if they're available to collaborate. Tell them your budget, deadlines, and where/how the illustrations will be used. And send over those lovely references you've collected! Check out this blog post on how to get an illustration quote.

Step 5: Negotiate (if necessary)

They'll send you a quote. Most illustrators are happy to negotiate and can edit the terms of the license to fit your budget, if need be.

Step 6: Seal the deal

Congratulations, you've found your illustrator! Make sure to ask for a contract that outlines the scope of work, timeline, payment terms, and other important details.

By following these steps, you'll be on your way to finding the perfect illustrator for your project. Get ready for the joy of bespoke artwork landing in your inbox!
